Javert had just finished flicking the appropriate detention slips--there were two of them today--to their corresponding seats when his first students of the day trickled in.

The students in Professor Javert's Divinations class understood his uncanny knack of simply knowing which students will arrive late on every given day. He always prepared and placed the detention slips in advance. Without even pausing for a breath, he would dock points from the unfortunate House mid-lecture seconds before the offending student at last rushed into the classroom, cheeks flushed and mind in a state of panic. The track record was exceptional, for those who counted: not once was he yet mistaken.

One must wonder what other secrets he kept beneath that tremendous hat of his, if he could accurately predict something as inconsistent as student attendance.

The room was arranged in a dignified semicircle, stripped of the incense and mystic mood that its previous inhabitant loved so dearly. Each station was outfitted simply, designed for a pair of students to huddle around a small but serviceable workspace. The stations were equipped with one enchanted pot of simmering water, a basket of eggs, and two empty bowls.

The Professor did not forget that he was to expect an annoying guest that day. At the topmost tier of this Divinations theater, Manfred von Karma would find a single chair with his name on it - the only vacant chair left in the room, was what Javert would say. It was sized to fit an adolescent child and labeled glibly with Monsieur von Karma's illustrious name.

Javert himself sat calm and resolute at a desk in the center of the semicircle. He wore a faint grimace at his lip, though the most observant of students may notice a disdainful deepening of his crumpled muzzle each time he glanced at a basket of eggs. A pile of papers sat on his right, a deck of charmed tarot cards shuffled by itself on his left, and his own miniature water-and-egg ensemble lay in wait in front of him. At his back was a blackboard suspended in midair, where a piece of chalk wrote of its own volition:

Conspicuously absent from the list were cartomancy and astrology. Interesting, considering the tirelessly shuffling tarot deck at his elbow.

A bell signaled the start of class. Javert regarded his students closely with unsettling tea-saucer gaze. He must blink when no one else was watching, if indeed it were possible to hold out for that long.

"Ovomancy," he pronounced the same way one would refer to taxes. "The Ancient Greeks devised it, I cannot fathom why they thought it practical. You in the back, put that down, they are not for eating. Now. A definition, for five house points?"

((OOC: Welcome to Divinations! The class is a mixed one. All may enter, all may interrupt. The first thread will be a back-and-forth lecture, the second thread will be workshop/demonstration/conclusions with your eggies, and the third will contain all other interactions that don't otherwise fit. Feel free to skip around and post what you'd like. With Ovomancy, your students will be breaking the eggs open, separating the whites from the yolks, dropping the whites into the simmering water and documenting the shapes formed by the whites. From the shapes your students are supposed to divine the future.

Good luck with that one.))
